First Edition, May 2020

Welcome, ladies and gents, athletes and friends, to the first edition of the Kinsei-Do/Stronghold Community e-newsletter!

The date is the 7th of May 2020, and as we sit here writing to you, we find ourselves in a situation that just a few months ago would have been unthinkable for all of us:
  • Large parts of the civilized world are on some sort of lockdown and world leaders everywhere are dealing with the global Covid-19 crisis in one way or another, some better, some via Twitter. While we are not imprisoned or otherwise robbed of our free will and control over our actions, we are for the most part confined to our homes and greatly restricted in our movements.
  • We of course strongly hope that each and everyone of you, your families and your friends, are healthy and safe, but we know there is a strong possibility that someone you know may have been or is directly impacted by the Covid-19 illness.
  • Our gym has been closed for over a month already, and a reopening date is currently not in sight. While this sounds trivial and of course is nothing compared to the drastic (economical) impact the crisis is having on millions of people around the globe, this is a big deal for us. Our gym is our second home, our happy place, our physical and mental sanctuary, and not being able to work out regularly in the company of our friends takes a real and significant toll on our body and mind!

It is in this historic moment that we want to reach out to you all and tell you that this community is strong, alive and here for you! We - the Kinsei-Do Ninjas, the athletes of the #HomeOfTangerangsFittest, the Stronghold gang or whichever name you personally identify with - will get through this crisis together, and we will come out on the other side mentally stronger and hungrier than ever before!

In this edition

  1. What's New
  2. "Hello there, Wita!"
  3. Health and Wellness tips
  4. Get your (online) Coach during the lockdown!
  5. WOD on earth was that?!
  6. Support your local business

What's New

In our training, we like to emphasize the importance of working on your weaknesses, on the movements and modalities you are not as good at, in order to become a better, more well rounded athlete and human being. Because when crunch time rolls around and the timer goes "3, 2, 1, Go!", your weakest link will determine where you land, not your prowess in favorite move.

As a fitness community, the same analogy applies right now. How strong and "good" we are in normal times, e.g. how amazing our facility is, or how well our members perform in local competitions, or even how much fun we have inside and outside the gym... it all does not mean much if we are not there for each other in these difficult times!
To this end, we want to support each and everyone of you to stay healthy, fit and sane.

Daily Workout on WodUp

Since 17th of March, before the gym was even forced to close, we have been offering a daily workout to you via our training system WodUp.
If you've been to a class at the gym since August 2019, then you should have a WodUp account. Simply log in to see the workout details, movement videos and instructions, and get cracking!

Note: if you are logged in to WodUp but don't see the workout, you may have to "join" the gym first.  Contact us to get that sorted out!

Check In and Virtual Workout Together via Zoom

Picture
On April 26th, Coaches Kafka, Wita, Atik and Jo held a teleconference via Zoom with several members of the community, to check in on everyone's wellbeing, mental and physical health and happiness.

On May 1st, we followed this up with a virtual workout together. Everyone submitted a short, 3 minute workout before the meeting, and we got together online and did five of them (for a total workout time of 15 minutes plus breaks) together.

It was so much fun that we are doing it again soon!

"Hello there, Wita!"
An interview with our Coach, Member and Friend.
What is your name? How long have you been a part of the community?

Hi my name is Wita and i first came here to Stronghold in 2017. Back then it was a totally different place than what it is now hahaha :D

Initially i came here and met Kafka to offer teaching Strong Nation class (or it used to be called Strong by Zumba). For some reason it did not work out, instead i started training here with Kafka and the others. After i got my APKI certifications i started teaching the "Cardio Wars" class. From then on, i continue to train and teach here until now :)
What do you do when you are not training/working out?

I am a mother of 1, so mostly when i am not training or teaching classes, i do something with her; school stuffs, watch movies together, go out and eat etc. Other than that, i like listening to Podcasts (my go-to: Chasing Excellence of course, and Jay Shetty's ON Purpose) reading, or listening to Audiobook on topics i'm interested in which is mostly Fitness and Nutrition hahaha. Currently reading "Wired to Eat" by Robb Wolf.  Other than that i watch Netflix series to unwind or read comic books :D
What is your favorite movement, workout or type of training?

CONDITIONINGS! :D cardio endurance, metcon type of thing. i secretly (or not so secret anymore?? heheh) love doing high reps.

What has been your biggest (training) success, or favorite memory of being with the community?

The feeling after you did all those intense WODs together and see your gym mates scattered on the gym floor like dead fishes is always my favorite moment. hahahah. Because i know each and everyone of us give our best in the workout, and there is nothing like working out together in a community that shares the same passion (and craziness)

Last year was actually a pretty tough year for me personally. I went through a major major change in my life and i dont know what would i become if i don't have Stronghold and the community as the place where i regain my focus and sanity. For at least 2 hours everyday i can 'forget' what weighing me down and just train, that has helped me a lot.

What do you miss the most of the gym or the community (since the closure)?

ROWING MACHINE! i never thought i'd said this hahah. And of course training together with the usual suspects. All those barbell-slamming dudes and handstand-ing dudettes made my day always! I MISS YEWWW GUYYSSS

what i love about the community is they are always up to bettering themselves. Yes motivation come and goes, there are bad days and good days, but we always motivate each other to get back on track, and of course to enjoy doing it (although it can be painful sometimes hahah)
What is the first thing you think you will do when the world returns to normal and our doors open again?

Grab a cup of coffee at the usual coffee joint nearby, go to the gym, hug everyone and get my hands on one of those rowing machiineee :D

Thanks for sharing with us, Wita!
Health and Wellness Tips
The gym is closed. Moving around outside is restricted. Meeting friends and training buddies is prohibited.

Between "home schooling" your children, keeping the house in order and working from home, it can be difficult to get a workout in, let alone adhere to a training routine. As a consequence, we unfortunately often develop an "all or nothing" attitude, and since we cannot be all in at the moment, we default to neglecting our needs completely.
  • Can't get to the gym three times per week for an hour or more of intense training? So we do nothing instead...
  • Can't manage to stick 100% to your carefully crafted diet plan and prepare every meal rigorously? So we go all out in the opposite direction and chuck down a tub of ice cream while watching Netflix...

It doesn't have to be that way!

So the next time, rather than do no exercise at all, go for a walk. Or do a 5 minute mobility routine on Youtube.
Next time you feel like going for that bag of chips, or the cookie jar? Do it, but just have a few pieces.

Everything in moderation is the key!

Locked Down, but not Locked Away!

If our daily WODs are not enough for you, or if you just can't muster up the motivation and self-conscious effort required to get up, get out and push yourself to do a workout on your own, don't forget that we also offer our effective and proven Online Coaching!

Whatever your circumstances (limited space, limited time, no equipment) or goals (lose weight, maintain strength, improve running), speak to Coach Jo to get a program tailored specifically for your needs and make sure you make the most of the lockdown!
